A Multi-Stakeholder Commission To Reshape Investors’ Role In The Mining Sector
Global demand for metals and minerals is predicted to triple by 2050 if we are to successfully transition to a net zero economy. At the same time, mining companies have been criticised for their negative social and environmental impacts.
Since 2023 Chronos has provided research and secretariat services to the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030, a landmark initiative backed by investors with US$15 trillion in assets under management to develop consensus about the role finance in realising a vision of a socially and environmentally responsible mining sector. The Commission aims to foster a mining sector that has a clear social license to operate, can meet the needs of society in a responsible manner without driving conflict or corruption, operates in a way that respects planetary boundaries, and positively contributes to social development and the environment, today and tomorrow.
Chronos’ work has included:
Production of a major Landscape Report which identified six key interventions that will reshape investors’ role in the mining value chain.
Engaging with a range of stakeholders on behalf of the Commission including investors, the mining sector, international organisations and civil society
Providing strategic and technical support to the Commission’s leadership to help drive forward the initiative’s progress.
